An operating partner for off-road aftermarket and overland equipment brands.
Rothwell works inside manufacturers and brands of truck and SUV accessories, overlanding equipment, and suspension, recovery, protection and lighting products, sold through dealers, installers, specialty and national retail, marketplaces and direct.
How we have done it
Every result below is from the principal’s operating record in adjacent consumer hard-goods and outdoor businesses, verified and stated without naming the company. They are not off-road or overland engagements. They are the same dealer, retail, Amazon, operating and transaction work, done in categories sold through the same kinds of dealers, distributors and retailers. See Selected Work.
The principal has spent more than twenty years in consumer hard goods: he began as a general manager of multiple powersports dealerships, has worked in the outdoor industry since 2005, has built dealer, distributor and national retail channels and an Amazon channel that ran alongside dealers, stood up a US company from nothing, and has taken three founder-led businesses through a sale. The firm’s experience adds automotive aftermarket accessories, metals, manufacturing, distribution and product commercialization.
The problems we solve
A dealer, distributor and installer network that has to be built, or rebuilt
New brands with product and no distribution; established brands whose installer base has thinned as shops closed or moved to campers and trailers; brands whose warehouse distributors carry the line but do not sell it. We build dealer and installer programs, establish the sales cadence, and lead account development through negotiation and onboarding within the authority agreed with the client.
National retail and online retail without losing the installers
The big box, the farm and ranch chain and the national online retailer bring volume and margin pressure at once. We set the assortment, the pricing architecture and the terms so the brand grows there without the installer network paying for it.
Direct and marketplace sales alongside the dealer channel
Many manufacturers in the sector now sell direct, and their retailers know it. We develop channel pricing structures and dealer policies, coordinating with legal counsel where required, so a brand can sell on Amazon and its own site while dealers keep selling it too, and we run the Amazon channel when the business needs it run.
Inventory, sourcing, landed cost and margin
Bumpers, racks, sliders, skid plates and drawer systems carry steel and aluminum, and for many brands the cost of imported product has moved faster than their price lists. We rebuild the cost model, reset price and dealer margin, and work the sourcing decision (import, domestic or a mix) on the numbers, with your customs broker on the tariff questions.
Capacity against the season
Spring is the peak, lead times stretch, made-to-order and stocked SKUs compete for the same shop floor, and the dealer waits. We run the planning, inventory and fulfillment operation until it runs itself.
A commercial motion the team cannot run on its own
Sales and channel execution for an approved product line, owned by someone accountable to the numbers.
Operating leadership the business cannot yet hire full time
A fractional COO, VP of Operations or Chief Commercial Officer inside the business, with defined authority and outcomes.
Where a sale or succession is in view
Larger companies and investment firms have been buying established off-road and overland brands, and they buy on the record. For owners who want that option, operating metrics, documentation, founder-dependency work and the operating side of the data room, alongside your banker and counsel.
Who this is for
- Privately held manufacturers and brands, owner-run, family-owned or investor-backed, of truck, SUV, off-road and overland equipment: suspension, bumpers and armor, recovery gear, racks and bed systems, lighting, storage, tents and shelter, 12-volt power.
- Specialty equipment brands that sell through dealers and installers and need the network, the program and the sales execution behind it.
- Powersports and adjacent vehicle-accessory businesses: UTV and side-by-side accessories, towing and trailer products, and aftermarket parts sold through dealers.
- Owners facing one of three pressures: a channel that has to be built or rebuilt, a cost and margin problem, or a transition inside a few years.
Who it is not for
- Vehicle manufacturers, tier-one suppliers and engine or drivetrain performance businesses, where the operating problems and the buyers are different and Rothwell’s record does not apply.
- Businesses that want a marketing agency, an Amazon agency or a sales rep. Rothwell works with all three and will tell you when you need one instead of us.
- Brands that need capital more than they need operating capacity. We are not investors or lenders.
Segments inside the industry
Truck and SUV accessories
Bed racks and systems, tonneau covers, steps, bumpers and armor, hitches and towing. Sold through installers, specialty retail, warehouse distributors and national retail; steel- and aluminum-heavy, so cost and sourcing decide the margin.
Overlanding equipment
Tents and shelter, awnings, drawer and storage systems, 12-volt power and refrigeration, camp kitchens, water and fuel storage. Event-driven and brand-driven, and now crowded; the brands that hold up are the ones with a channel strategy and a cost model.
Suspension, recovery, protection and lighting
Lift and leveling kits, shocks, winches and recovery gear, skid plates and sliders, light bars and switch systems. Installer-dependent and margin-sensitive, where pricing discipline and dealer support decide who carries the line and where marketplace price erosion shows up first.
Powersports and adjacent
UTV and side-by-side accessories and aftermarket parts sold through powersports dealers. The principal’s first industry.
What the industry is dealing with
The demand is real: US specialty-equipment aftermarket sales reached $52.92 billion in 2025, with pickup owners alone spending more than $15 billion on off-road, utility and recreation modifications (SEMA 2026 Market Report). Overland participation has kept growing, to a reported 12 million Americans in 2025 (Overland Expo 2025 Industry Report). What has changed is the cost and the channel: SEMA reports nearly a third of manufacturers shifting to domestic suppliers under the current tariffs, distributors and retailers thinned their inventories when costs rose, more manufacturers sell direct, and the overland category in particular has seen softer sales, price competition in its best-known products, and consolidation by larger buyers. These pressures create strategic and operational decisions that cannot be separated. Rothwell helps businesses turn those decisions into commercial plans, operating priorities, and measurable execution.
How Rothwell operates inside your business
Rothwell takes responsibility for defined commercial and operating work, with agreed objectives, authority, and accountability. We work alongside the owner and existing team to execute the plan, measure performance, and build the systems the business needs to sustain the results. How Rothwell works describes an engagement from the first conversation to the handoff.
How we work with the rest of the industry
We work alongside reps, warehouse distributors, buying groups, installers, agencies and bankers from inside the business: selecting reps and holding them to a plan, giving a distributor a program worth selling, giving an installer network the support it needs to carry the line, giving an Amazon agency a channel structure to execute, giving a banker a business that holds up to inspection. If the right answer is one of those firms instead of us, we will say so in the first conversation. The shared buyer with outdoor recreation, and the metals in the products, are why Rothwell also works in those two industries.
Tell us which channel, which cost, or which transition is the problem.
Tell us where the business is stuck, what has changed, and what needs to be different by next season. We’ll determine whether Rothwell has the relevant experience and operating capacity to help.
